The friar - An Analysis Character Analysis The Friar-- Humble Shepherd or Crafty Wolf? Chaucer was known for his ironic descriptions of various sojourners in the Canterbury Tales . The description given to the Friar in the General Prologue does not stray from Chaucer’s trademark. The Friar is described as a limitour [begs on the behalf of the poor], yet we see that he is a bachelor on a love hunt, a crooked businessman and does complete his duties as a Friar. The Friar knows many beautiful women, many affluent men, and rarely associates with the class of people he should live among. The Friar’s duties were to live among the poor, to beg on their behalf and to give his earnings to aid their struggle for livelihood. The profit he generates is proven because he looked like â€Å"a belle out of the presse.† (265). This point is reinforced in lines 257-258: â€Å" yit wolde he have a ferthing er he wente; his purchas was wel bettre than his rente..† His purchases far exceeds his expected income from begging. The Friar should have been very poor, perhaps worse off than the people he helped, however this Friar was eating healthy and living large. This hero of the poor, the Friar apparently is not doing his duties. As Chaucer gives a description of the Friar we see how this can be surmised. In lines 215-216 we see: â€Å"Ful wel biloved and familer was he, With frankelains over al in his contree....† The Friar knew all the well to do country men, when he should know the beggars of the region better. Chaucer evens states in lines 240-242: â€Å"he knew the tavernes wel in every towne and every hostiler and tappestre bet than a lazar or a beggestere.† This man of God, knew the innkeepers and barmaids better than the poor people of his designated region. Racism in American History X â€Å"Get the fuck out of my house!† exclaims Derek as he pulls down his wife-beater to reveal a swastika tattoo, â€Å"See this? That means not welcome.† American History X, directed by Tony Kaye, is a movie about the transformation of Derek Vinyard: a young neo-Nazi skinhead. Derek’s father, Dennis Vinyard, was a middle-class fireman who disagreed with many of the ideological changes–such as affirmative â€Å"black† action–happening in America at the time. His father died while trying to put out a fire in a minority community. Derek essentially put the blame on the minorities for his father’s death as he says in the news interview: â€Å"Decent hard working Americans like my dad are getting rubbed out by these social†¦show more content†¦And Murray also adds that the statistic could also be due to a large amount of prejudice in the justice system towards race. For instance Derek’s bl ack friend in jail was accused of assault and sentenced to six years because he dropped a stolen TV on the policeman’s foot. Derek oversimplifies the issue by presenting two reasons and fails to acknowledge any of the underlying factors that may be in play to produce the statistic. Finally, near the end of the conversation Derek uses the red herring fallacy to further support his radical view. â€Å"If Rodney King had been driving along, hopped up on Chivas Regal and PCP and had killed Danny, you’d be singing a very different tune about the force of those cops.† In order to prove his point that King deserved the beating for what he had done, Derek presents the situation in a totally different light. Derek immediately shifts the discussion to something emotional (the death of his brother Danny) and the possibility of King hitting into someone during his high-speed chase is totally off topic because he didn’t in fact hit anybody. The passage of time is the central theme in his poetry; he believed that it was the source of all the unhappininess in the world. Hardy thought that the forces of the universe dwarfed humanity and like many others in the latter years of the nineteenth century he felt a great sense of personal insignificance. In the first five stanzas Hardy talks of the ship lying at the bottom of the ocean. He portrays a feeling of calm by using alliterations. The use of sibilance in the first line, solitude sea, sets softness in the opening tone. When he wants to talk of the rough nature of the ocean he uses the letter c in the words Cold currents, which gives it a very harsh feel, and emphasises the artic sea and cold conditions. The poem then continues to describe that whilst the ship was being built, its destiny and fate had already been decided. The iceberg, which was being growing in the Artic Ocean was doing so at the exact same time and would eventually destroy it. This illustrates the themes of fate and destiny. The inevitable collision between ship and iceberg happens in the last stanza. In the opening stanzas Hardy describes his feelings about the people of the time. He thinks that they are very vane and they are the ugliest of creatures. This is illustrated s in the fourth stanza where he talks of the people being able to see there reflection in the mirror but all they can really see is the sea worm which is the ugliest creature alive. He then uses such adjectives as grotesque, slimed, dumb, indifferent and this shows his disgust for the upper class and what he thinks of them. In the next three stanzas he talks of human vanity. In order to describe this he uses alliteration using the letter j as in Jewels and joy, which gives a deep and rich sound. He also talks about how the people on the ship do not appreciate what they have and he mocks the people because they have all this gold but it is now worthless and no longer special because it is lost at the bottom of the sea. What does this valglouriousness down here? In other words he is trying to emphases the there are only fish to look at it and they dont appreciate and they think it absurd. Thomas Hardy feels that human beings could expect nothing from life and if they were aware enough they would see that eventually all of there hopes would be dashed and they would loose the ones that they loved best. This feeling is probably brought on by the death of his wife who was very dear to him. Hardy felt life was a downward spiral towards an inevitable conclusion, and this is shown in the sixth stanza where he says, The Immanent Will that stirs and urges everything. In the next few stanzas he talks of the growth of the iceberg, which is simultaneously contrasted it to the building of the ship. He says the iceberg didnt have the same hype as the ship even though it was equally special and their destinies were intertwined. Track Your Time and Boost Your Bottom Line Do you keep track of how long it takes you to finish each writing project? Doing so will not only show you how much you earn per hour but will provide other great side benefits as well. For most of my freelancing career, Ive resisted tracking my writing time. I worried that it would affect the quality of my writing and, perhaps more importantly, that Id find out I would be better off flipping burgers. Thankfully, I discovered otherwise. Being aware that the clock is ticking, forces me to jump straight into the story instead of trying to find the perfect opening. Its also helping me stay focused on the writing, which means that I get more writing done in a shorter period of time. Im also motivated to stay on track so I can stay within a certain income range. When I start slowing down, I know its time to stop for a break. Theres no point in forcing myself to keep going because thats when the quality takes a dramatic nosedive. What surprised me the most was that this process has led me to look at time differently. Since I have two other careers, my writing sessions are often limited. In the past Id look at the clock and think, Whats the point. I only have half an hour. I felt it was barely long enough to get warmed up.
